HONGDUI PC09 TrueGrid: Build a Precision Dog Hole Workbench Without a CNC

A great workbench is more than a flat surface. With a carefully aligned dog hole grid, it becomes a foundation for repeatable positioning and flexible workholding. But creating that grid by hand introduces a challenge: every marked center, every template adjustment, and every drill setup can introduce error.

The HONGDUI HD30-PC09 TrueGrid MFT Drilling Layout is designed to make that process more controlled. Instead of relying only on pencil marks and repeated measurements, it uses mechanical registration and a guided drilling system to help you build an accurately aligned grid on a standard wooden workbench, without a CNC machine.

Why the Layout Matters as Much as the Hole

Drilling a hole is straightforward. Keeping an entire series of holes consistently spaced and aligned is the harder part. Small layout errors can become more noticeable as the grid expands across the tabletop.

TrueGrid addresses this by giving you a physical reference for both positioning and drilling. Its purpose is not simply to help you make more holes, but to help those holes work together as a usable system.

1. Mechanical Locking Instead of Repeated Guesswork

The PC09 uses screw-down caps to secure the template directly to the tabletop. Rather than depending solely on clamps that may shift during setup, the template is mechanically fastened to the work surface to help resist movement during drilling.

The drilling guide also uses HONGDUI's three-ring expansion bench dog design to lock into the template. This mechanical connection helps resist tipping and shifting, keeping the guide registered to the layout as you work.

The practical advantage is a more stable relationship between the template, the guide, and the workbench. You spend less of the process trying to hold a layout in place and more of it working from a defined reference.

2. Two-Stage Drilling for a More Controlled Setup

TrueGrid separates drilling into two stages. A dedicated 3 mm pilot drill guide establishes the center point first, before the final hole is bored. This creates a guided starting point rather than asking the final cutter to locate itself from a surface mark alone.

The system's custom long-shank Forstner bit is designed for worktops up to 40 mm thick. Its extended reach accommodates thicker tops, while the guided setup is intended to help keep the drilling direction perpendicular to the surface.

For a workbench grid, both position and drilling direction matter. This two-stage approach is designed to give you control over each, although the finished result still depends on careful setup and drilling technique.

3. A 96 mm Grid, with 48 mm Options Where You Need Them

The base layout uses 96 mm spacing. The PC09 also allows accurately positioned intermediate holes, creating 48 mm spacing in selected areas.

That flexibility means your tabletop does not have to use the same hole density everywhere. You can keep the main work area on a 96 mm grid and add closer-spaced positioning options near a vise or another area where more choices are useful.

Rather than drilling extra holes without a clear reference, you can build denser sections into the same underlying layout.

4. Expand the Grid Across Your Workbench

A compact template should not limit the size of your finished work surface. TrueGrid uses anchor rings and three points of contact with previously drilled holes to register the template as it moves across the bench.

Previously completed holes become the reference for the next section. This is designed to maintain alignment as you extend the grid, reducing the need to remeasure and mark every new area independently.

Whether you are laying out a compact workstation or a larger bench, the approach is the same: establish the starting layout carefully, then extend it using the system's mechanical references.

Who Is the PC09 Designed For?

The HONGDUI PC09 is a practical option for woodworkers building a new dog hole workbench, replacing an existing top, or adding a structured grid to a standard wooden work surface. It is especially relevant when you want repeatable spacing without access to a CNC machine.

Its combination of direct template fastening, expansion-based guide registration, two-stage drilling, and expandable layout makes it a system focused on controlling the process, not just marking the next hole.

A Better Workbench Starts with a Better Reference

The key idea behind TrueGrid is simple: precision becomes easier to pursue when the setup gives you a stable reference at every stage.

With mechanical locking, guided pilot drilling, 96 mm and 48 mm layout options, and registration from previously drilled holes, the HONGDUI PC09 TrueGrid brings a systematic approach to building a dog hole workbench.
