What makes the KM17 Pro version different from standard router planes?
The Pro version features a captive lead-screw mechanism that keeps the blade held securely in a threaded carrier, preventing it from falling out when the lock is loosened.
What is the adjustment resolution?
The tool uses a micrometric adjustment knob. One full rotation typically moves the blade 1mm, allowing you to dial in depth changes as small as 0.02mm to 0.05mm for final whisper-thin shavings that leave a glass-smooth finish.
What materials are used in its construction?
Body: High-strength die steel (often finished in a signature black coating) for significant weight and stability.
Blades: High-speed steel (HSS), which retains a sharp edge longer than standard carbon steel when working with abrasive hardwoods.
How do I change or remove the blade?
To remove the blade, fully back out the adjustment knob until the threaded carrier releases the blade shaft. When re-inserting, ensure the notch in the blade shaft aligns perfectly with the carrier pin before tightening the locking collar.
Can the blade be used in a bullnose(outboard) position?
Yes. The blade can be mounted in the standard position (facing inward) or reversed (facing outward). The outboard position is essential for reaching into corners or stopped grooves where the tool's body would otherwise prevent the cutter from reaching the end of the cut.
What is the purpose of the integrated depth stop?
The built-in depth stop allows you to preset a final cutting depth. You can plane progressively deeper until the adjustment knob hits the stop, ensuring that multiple grooves or tenons across a large project are all exactly the same depth.
How do I sharpen the KM-17 Pro blades?
Because the blades have a removable cutting head, you can unscrew the small hex bolt to detach the cutter from the shaft. This allows you to lap the flat back and hone the bevel on standard sharpening stones much more easily than a traditional L-shaped router blade.
My fence isn't staying parallel. How do I fix this?
Check the two locking points on the fence rods. Ensure the rods are seated fully in the body of the plane. When using the fence, apply pressure to the side of the plane closest to the fence to prevent it from crabbing or pivoting away from your reference edge.
Why is the blade shuddering or vibrating during a cut?
This is usually caused by taking too deep a cut or a dull blade. For the best results, set the blade to take a shaving only 0.1mm to 0.2mm thick. If the wood is particularly figured, ensure the locking collar is tightened firmly to eliminate any play in the blade carrier.

Wow. What can I say about this router plane? Excellence in a small package? The tool you never knew you needed? My new favorite tool? A confluence between beauty and utility?
You get where I’m going with this. This router plane is of such incredible quality and design that I find myself at a loss for words. So let’s start with the basics. The KM-17 router plane is a confluence of Katz-Moses and Hongdui - one of the premier woodworking tool designers working together with one of, if not the single finest, hand tool maker in the world, Hongdui. Don’t take my word for it, as I simply repeat the words of Jonathan Katz-Moses and his opinion of Hongdui. What I can tell you from personal experience is that I own a handful of very fine hand tools (I have a bit of a thing for very fine tools): Veritas, Lie-Nielsen, Woodpeckers, Starrett, Stanley, etc. And now not only do I add Hongdui to that list, but I would say that it many ways it goes straight to the top of that list.
This router plane is absolutely heirloom grade, going up there with my favorite Veritas hand planes and chisels. But you can tell all this at a glance, simply by handling it. It oozes quality. But it also just WORKS. It is amazing at cleaning out grooves and dados, smoothing out half-laps from your miter saw, flattening the inside of sunk panels or small boxes.
The plane comes with two knives: a flat and a 45° blade, each of which have their uses. You may also choose to purchase their additional knife kit, for around $75. This gives you an additional handful of knives for smaller grooves and detail work.
So the standout features: there is ZERO play in the height adjustment, zero backlash, allowing you to make extremely precise changes to the cut height. The plane comes with an integrated fence, which allows you to graduate from a clean out tool, do one that can precisely lay down fresh grooves and dados by following the edge. It’s extremely easy to swap the blades. And they’ve even made it so that you can remove the entire blade assembly, rotate it 180°, and change it from a pulling tool to a pushing tool.
I can’t say enough nice things about this tool. So onto the only con…the price, which is $259. All I can say is that you get what you pay for. You can certainly find a nice router plane for less money (look at Cowryman brand). I have used them in the past, but nothing ever this nice. And the difference really is night and day. Comfort, ease of use, impeccable design and craftsmanship, and versatility are the features that justify the price.
What’s more, if you want the complete set, including the extra blades bundle, you’ll pay between $330-$350. So certainly not a cheap product.
In the end, it comes down to personal preference and money. If you can afford to spend the money, I don’t think you will ever regret it. By the same token, you can find one for less than half the price and still get much of the utility out of the tool.
IMHO, if you can buy it, do buy it. You won’t be disappointed.

I love this plane. I was eyeing it for a while and when it became available as part of Amazon Vine, I jumped at the opportunity. Let me start with two negatives and why I took off one star from my review first, before getting into all the wonderful things about it.
1) The price is $259.99 while the exact same item at kmtools.com is $179.99 and currently on sale for $159.99. If I weren't getting this as part of the Vine program, I wouldn't have bought it.
2) The angled cutting blade and included handle to convert it to a marking knife is a very nice feature, even though I have a couple of marking knives already. The problem is that it's very difficult to sharpen this blade. There are three issues on this front - first two are significant:
a) If you look at the manual and how they show one must mount the blade on the handle, it looks like it should go at 45 degrees to the handle. However this is simply NOT possible. It will go either straight or 90 degrees.
b) You can't mount the blade such that the grooves fit to the handle for a secure connection. I mean, you CAN mount it that way but there would be no way of sharpening the blade as the handle would get in the way. The only way one can mount it is on the opposite side but that doesn't provide very solid registration.
c) At first I wasn't even able to mount the blade as shown in the pictures. I finally figured out after 30 minutes of putzing with it. There are two similar screws in the assembly, one slightly longer than the other. In my case, the longer **** was mounted on the base of the router plane with the straight edge blade. The shorter **** is not long enough to mount the blades on the handle for sharpening. So, you have to use the short **** for mounting the blades at the base of the router plane and the longer one on the handle.
Having said all that, I got this plane for the primary function, as a router plane with straight blade. There is a design shortcoming in that you can't plane a very narrow groove with this plane (you can do a narrow rabbet though using the included edge guide). I hope they release narrow profile blades .
The adjustments are very easy and intuitive. The edge guide can be installed on either side of the plane and the handles are very comfortable (for me at least). Note that the blade has a slight angle such that only the cutting edge contacts the work piece, as it should. So, to set the cut depth, you have to put the plane on a level surface, then, release the blade until it contacts the surface, tighten it, set the depth gauge to zero. From this point on, you have a precisely controlled depth control which is absolutely easiest thing to setup. With this router plane, now when I do dado or rabbet cuts and I get uneven base, I'll be able to clean them up super easily. Everything about this plane, other than the two issues mentioned above, is a joy to use.
