How do I prevent the roller from seizing up?
Because sharpening involves water and metal slurry, it is important to rinse the HD29 under clean water after each use to remove grit. Periodically apply a drop of light machine oil or dry PTFE lubricant to the roller axle to keep it spinning freely.
What materials are used in the HD29?
The main body is CNC-machined from 7075 aluminum alloy, which offers superior strength and lightness compared to standard aluminum. The clamping parts are made from 440C stainless steel, ensuring long-term rust resistance and durability in wet sharpening environments.
What is the Three-Position Eccentric Roller?
This is a specialized feature for creating micro-bevels. By turning the eccentric roller, you can slightly lift the angle of the tool without resetting the clamping position. It typically offers three distinct settings:
1. Standard: For the primary bevel.
2.Micro-Bevel 1: For a fine secondary edge.
3.Micro-Bevel 2: For an even finer final polishing angle.
What size tools can it hold?
The HD29 features reversible extension jaws that support a clamping range from 0mm to 70mm. This allows it to hold everything from narrow 1/8 Inch chisels to wide plane irons (up to 2-3/4 Inch).
How do I set the correct sharpening angle?
The system includes an integrated quick-positioning tool. By aligning the edge of your chisel or plane iron with the laser-etched markers on the positioning gauge, you can quickly set common angles from 15° to 50°.
Do I need a screwdriver to clamp my tools?
No. The HD29 is designed for tool-free operation. It utilizes knurled stainless steel thumb screws that provide enough leverage to lock your chisel or plane iron securely by hand.
How do I ensure the tool is square in the guide?
The clamping jaws are precision-ground to be perfectly parallel to the roller. As long as your tool's sides are straight and you seat the tool firmly against the jaw shoulders before tightening, it will automatically align square to the sharpening stone.
Can I use this on a variety of sharpening stones?
Yes. The wide roller design provides excellent stability on water stones, oil stones, and diamond plates. The stainless steel roller glides smoothly and prevents the guide from tipping, which is a common issue with narrow-wheeled honing guides.
Is it suitable for both right-handed and left-handed users?
Yes. The HD29 features a symmetrical design, making it equally comfortable to use regardless of your dominant hand.

Superb sharpening template. Contained in a box worthy of a luxury watch, the finish of the components is exemplary and the template works very well. I sharpened a 12 mm wood chisel with it and the result is markedly better than what I was achieving with my Veritas template.

It is a fantastic tool today; I would swear only by the quality to sharpen my tools, I would no longer be missing out, it certainly has a certain price, however, I absolutely do not regret this purchase. I put other accessories that work with this product in my basket; it is a very sophisticated tool.

I continue to be impressed by the quality of Hongdui tools, and this is no exception. Pleasantly surprised to discover that both the small and large jaws are made of steel. The only complaint I have is that the additional **** is mismatched and is just a plain black **** rather than the shiny one shown in all of the reviews (see arrow in photo).

I also have a Veritas guide and this one seems to be much more capable, easier to use and of equal quality.The only odd thing is, as shown in the picture the locking **** on the clamp dont match. One of the **** is a standard black knurled finish and the other one is a machined diamond pattern is what looks like bright stainless steel.
Ive been using this guide for several months now, and I havent regretted buying it once. The quality is top-notch. Its very easy to use.

The product is of very high quality, solid, robust, with good finishes and very well packaged in a die-cut box to fit each of the components so it can be stored in perfect condition. It is designed to sharpen flat blades such as chisels and carpenter's plane blades of almost all widths. It is NOT designed to sharpen other types of edges such as knives, scissors, axes..., for which there are other tools. The kit is very complete since, in addition to the sharpening guide itself, it includes an angle gauge for the cutting edge of the tool we want to sharpen, a ruler to position the tool at the correct angle, and an additional clamp to immobilize the tool on the guide. The guide has 2 positions, one for the main edge and another for the secondary edge, so we do not need to readjust the tool on the guide to carry out this second edge
Build quality and ergonomics are excellent. Very accurate and feels very good to use. Has good manual in english. Comes in a nice gift box with kaizen padding.
